NOTD: My Geometric Design for Refinery 29 Nail Art Nation

So as you know I was honored to be one of the 18 finalists for Refinery 29 Nail Art Nation contest sponsored about Revlon. Now that they contest has officially been launched in July, I can release more details about what I had to do.

So the contest required 5 design submissions for each of the 5 challenges below. Each week in July will present all the finalists designs. . . All the designs had to be done in a week time frame last month.

The Challenges required that we use ONLY Revlon nail polishes
(which they sent all the finalists) to complete these challenges, and no nail stickers, decals, or glued-on accessories.

CHALLENGE #1: Graphics Use Revlon polishes to create bold geometric shapes, technically complex patterns, and stunning abstract art.

CHALLENGE #2: Summer Florals Grab your Revlon polishes and go abstract, pointillist, or basically anything that delivers the unexpected. This shouldn’t be your grandma’s floral print.

CHALLENGE #3: White-Hot Neon For this round, create arresting, original day or night looks using only  white and Revlon’s Nail Art Neon polishes — no blacks, no darks, no earth tones, and no excuses.

CHALLENGE #4: Black Tie Use Revlon polish to create innovative looks appropriate for weddings, New Year’s Eve bashes, or other black-tie events.

I found out last night that week one challenge geometric theme has already begun, so we can reveal our challenge #1 designs!

For my abstract geometric design, I was inspired by the colors from my H&M dress. I used Revlon’s Post Modern  the nude pink as a base and Revlon’s Pinkasso the orange coral & Revlon’s Monet the teal light green for the alternating chevron style French tip and near base, topped off with accent triangles using Revlon’s Urban the dark royal blue. I decided to stick to something that showed off a nice geometric pattern that was also clean and visually pleasing to the eye.

Below are swatches of more Floss Gloss colors I ordered.  I loved the other polishes I received in my first order I was beyond excited to order more.  This time I also wanted to try the glitter polishes they had.  The colors I ordered are Glow Star, Pony, Dimepiece and Stun.  I must say, I was not disappointed with my new colors.

Glow Star: Such a beautiful light mint green.  It applies opaque in two coats and with the brush applies evenly. This color totally makes me look like I have the perfect tan.  I really do love the color.  In this picture I also have Stun as an accent nail.

Stun: I am not a huge fan of glitters, mainly because when they dry they are not smooth.  Some glitters you also have to apply a few coats to get the glitter to be opaque.  This particular glitter applies nicely in 2 coats.  It also does not dry so rough a top coat can’t smooth it out. It even has some holo in it which helps make it sparkle so beautifully.

Pony: I can’t get enough of this color.  It is the perfect peachy neon.  This one also makes me look super tan.  I think that is such a great color for summer.  This color also applied evenly and in 2 coats.  Even though it looks peach, it is more of a neon color.  A great one to have for summer.

Dimepiece: This is a great silver glitter that also applies in 2 coats and dries rather smoothly.  A top coat can help in smoothing the glitter out.  I really love this glitter because it applies so nicely in 2 coats.  It also has some holo effects which makes it sparkle so nicely.  It’s a beautiful glitter I think everyone should have an uber sparkly glitter like this.

NOTD: Tiny Polka Dotted Pyramid Nail Art

NOTD: Tiny Polka Dotted Pyramid Nail Art

I like organizing my nail polishes and doing a routine inventory because I can’t bear the thought of too many untrieds (or forgottens- as I call them) just sitting in there in the midst of my polishes. It also inspires me to come up with new nail art too.
And behold I totally forgot about the Covergirl Outlast nail polishes I bought when it first came out! So for my nails of the day- I picked out this pretty creme pink called “pink-finity” from Covergirl as a base and used Revlon’s “Silver Dollar” a metallic silver, Revlon’s “Ocean” a metallic teal, and Sally Hansen’s Insta Dri “Pronto Purple” a metallic purple for polka dotting.

Have you found any favorites in your  forgottens or untrieds? ~xoxo B

I’ll be sharing a tutorial later on a very easy gradient glitter (the second nail in photo):

Mani Monday: Super Easy Bobby Pin Floral & Polka Dot Mani

Recently, the fabulous fashionista Dianna from Budgetbabe.com reached out to me to do a guest post on her blog for some nail art! I was beyond excited and humbled. For my first guest post, I wanted to do a fun design that would be ideal for Spring/Summer and also something anyone could do without having to use any special nail art tools- all you need is ONE regular hair bobby pin (and obviously polish :P) which I know everyone has!

Please check out my guest post here on budgetbabe to see my EASY step by step tutorial to achieve this “Super Easy Bobby Pin Floral & Polka Dot Mani” using Pure Ice nail enamels I created below:

manimondaypureice

The folks at Pure Ice nail enamels were kind enough to send me these colors to use for my design:

pure ice haul

[Image was created with stock photos sent by Pure Ice]

  1. Flirt Alert- A bright hot orchid pink creme
  2. Jackpot- A magenta pink with a slight pearl finish
  3. Strapless- A glitterly bright blue in clear base
  4. Scream- A beautiful teal-turquoise creme
  5. Wild thing- A nice fun lime green creme

Review: I think these colors are perfect for this Spring and Summer- my favorites being “Scream” and “Flirt Alert”. I was actually really excited to use these polishes because I have never used this particular brand to do nail art.  Honestly, I was actually surprised at how pigmented and smooth the formula is!  I only applied 2 coats of “Scream” and “Flirt Alert” to do the base for my design and was so happy how great it applied on! I’m always very picky about the nail polish brush and was pleased at how great the brush was as opposed to other comparable brands in this price range.

Another thing I didn’t realize is that Pure Ice nail enamels are also free of formaldehyde, toluene and DBP! And at only $1.99 a bottle, a great polish to have for nail art galore!

Pure Ice nail enamels are available through www.pureicecosmetics.com and Walmart stores nationwide.

Mani Monday: Galaxy Nails

As motivation to post more diligently on my blog, I will be posting my nail art every Monday for ManiMondays, this monday I have for you GALAXY NAILS!

I have done galaxy nail art before but this time I used Zoya’s “Storm”for the base and holy glittertastic fun! I think that Storm adds a whole new dimension by making it way more galaxy and space-like because of all the micro fine holo glitters! My nail buddy Kay (check out her Instagram for amazing swatches) recommended this color and I absolutely LOVE it! I have gotten several requests to do a tutorial for this look via my Instagram but I highly recommend cutepolish’s galaxy nail tutorial– it’s very easy and fun! I never posted a tutorial before but maybe I will work up enough courage (and time) to do one someday! Perhaps a picture by picture one first to pop my tutorial cherry?

Hope this post inspires you to try some galaxy nails!

Nails Inc Gel Effect Plumpling Top Coat Review & Swatch

I know it’s been awhile so I will start off with a new product that I’m absolutely in love with- the Nails Inc. Kensington Caviar Gel Effect Plumpling Top Coat! I actually purchased this last month because I have been looking to try out some of the new Gel topcoats that don’t require any sort of special lamps to try. A lot of brands have been coming out with their Gel topcoats from Deborah Lippmann, Dior, and even Julep. I will probably eventually try the Deborah Lippmann next or the Dior just to compare, but for now I am very satisfied with how the Nails Inc. worked out!

Overall, the polish applied very smoothly and the formula itself was not too thick or gooey defeating any preconceived notions I had that it might be. I simply applied 2 generous coats over 2 of my favorite colors from the Nails Inc. Spring Summer collection*“Royal Botanical Gardens” (the bright mint-turquoise like color) and “Kensington Palace Gardens” (the lovely coral-pink hue color). *I actually bought the whole collection and will do a separate review of these on a later post.

Sooo the gel coat didn’t take very long to dry- not as fast as Seche Vite topcoat but alot more “plumper” effect in my opinion. It dried to be super shiny and felt so fantastic! I got so many compliments on my nails throughout that week. I had several strangers approach me and asked me where I had my gel nails done at the salon- which I think speaks greatly considering the fact my polish wasn’t even applied 100% perfectly. I highly recommend this gel coat! I do alot of work with my hands- as a mother of a toddler I am always washing them constantly too. Nails Inc. Kensington Caviar Gel Effect Plumpling Top Coat is definitely worth it at only $10 at Sephora.com. I honestly can’t find anything negative about this product.

A friend of mine, Bee, (check out her blog for amazing jackpot of cute iphone wallpapers and the most adorable iphone cases) requested that I take identical shots for a week to see how it lasted so here it is for your reference- in natural light, I have to add that day 7 was a very cloudy and rainy day so it seems it wasn’t as shiny- but it in actuality it was! NO CHIPS!

I hope this post was helpful!
